There are now at least 5 prominent Black activists who died under suspicious circumstances after gaining attention for their organizing in the past few years.Sandra Bland, 28, found dead in her jail cell in what the coroner declared a suicide. She made videos discussing police brutality and Black Lives Matter for months before her death.
Edward Crawford, 27, found dead in what was declared a suicide. He was the subject of a famous 2014 photo throwing a tear gas canister back at the police.
Deandre Joshua, 20, found shot inside a burning car the night protesters took to the streets to protest the decision not to indict Darren Wilson.
Muhiyidin Moye (Muhiyidin d'Baha), 32, shot several times yesterday in New Orleans. He was famous for jumping through police tape to grab a Confederate flag from a white supremacist protester last February. Despite not succeeding in getting the flag, police continued to arrest him. He was an international activist and widely recognized for his contributions to racial justice.
Darren Seals, 29, found shot inside a burning car. He was active in the Ferguson protests and was among St. Louis’s most prominent activists. He was also a talented musician and co-founded Hands Up United, an organization dedicated to police accountability. His killer was never found.
